Honestly, Philly is much much better today than when I grew up there in the 60's and 70's. I would encourage you to visit the Fairmount section north of the Art Museum and today you could walk to see the https://www.easternstate.org, and even extend to Saint Joe's Prep at 17th & Girard, my high school. The Jesuit Priest that kept Saint Joes Prep in North Philly deserve a lot of praise for not abandoning the City and moving out to the Saint Joes University campus when there was a fire in the 1960's. The Fairmount area has really benefitted from The Jesuits and others that stayed and kept digging out for years and years.

I was at an Autism conference on Friday and a topic of conversation is the "disincentives" for people like Dustin to work. When he makes a paycheck, it is basically deducted from his Disability Benefits. They keep him poor. Obviously we are in a position in life where Dustin can bob and weave with us in support, but you are taking about a HUGE inner city problem beyond the Disability population that have disincentives to work.

Finally, my white nephew is married to a black woman and they lived in West of Penn Philly for years and they were part of the improvement to that area. They moved to Poughkeepsie, NY for job opportunities unrelated to Philly and I have hope that they can help be part of a change in Poughkeepsie where the towns population has dropped from 50,000 in the IBM days to 35,000 today. My secret plan is to get Archdiocese of NY to commit to some building there to Dustin's population and they can bring revitalization to Poughkeepsie like Teri in Oceanside, CA where the Military and Autism populations will live and support one another https://www.teriinc.org !!

Wow! You nailed it Hal. Since being with my Black husband for over 12 years now I have thought and read and reasoned about this situation. I'll be sharing. Thanks so much for your well-considered perspective.
