Your Wesleyan education wasn’t wasted, Hal. There’s a lot of “truth” in what you’re saying here. I think the right is actually right when it says that the mainstream media is against it — mostly because so many of the right’s recent stances and objectives are so insidiously wrong. Any fact-based journalist would just have to be left scratching his or her head upon reading or hearing what today’s right-wingers are espousing. And the lack of any kind of agreement on what constitutes objective truth is very much at the core of the issue. At a recent book reading, I asked novelist Neal Stephenson what scared him the most about today’s world and his response, without hesitation, was: “the absence of any shared reality.” We’re now seeing clearly what the results of its absence have led to.
